The leaders of Gateway Church of Christ established the Gateway Christian Preschool in 1977 as an out reach program for the community. A large majority of the children come from the community vs. the church. It is a non-profit institution, supported in part by the church. Tuition and registration fees of students provide the bulk of the working budget.
Since "children learn what they live," it is our goal to capture your child's enthusiasm for the world. A balance of structured and self-initiated activities provide for growth academically, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively. The curriculum is designed to develop skills through creative experiences, to instill respect for self and others, to care for property and to learn limits of behavior through praise and natural consequences. This preschool program will help your child expand his/her self-confidence, feeling of self-worth and love for Christ and others.
All of the employees of the school consider themselves Christians and are devoted to the education of young children. There are many long term employees working together to build a quality school.
Barbara began teaching preschool in 1993. While she is experienced in teaching all age groups, the majority of her classroom years were spent teaching the four year old children. Barbara began the directorship at Gateway in 2008.

Our school began VPK classes for 4 year old children in 2005 when the State of Florida first offered the program. To qualify to be a VPK student, the child must live in the state and be 4 years old by September 1st of the year enrolled. The parents does not have to pay anything for the VPK program; the state pays everything. The goal of the VPK is to prepare children to be ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.
The preschool was first licensed by the state in 1977. Our license number is C01ES0090. We maintain all the rules and regulations of the Department of Children and Families. Several yearly inspections are conducted to maintain the license.
Gateway Christian Preschool has previously been accredited through NAEYC. In 2007 we began the accreditation process through APPLE (Accredited Professional Preschool Learning Environment).
(APPLE) is a voluntary National Accreditation Program for preschool, child care centers and early learning programs. The accreditation procedure is an honest evaluation of indicators of quality as reported and reflected in each individual program and as verified by an on-site visit. All components of a program are examined including: Administration, Classroom environment and licensing compliance, Parent and community involvement, Advocacy on behalf of children and child care, Teacher credentials, training and background screening, Teacher to child ratios, Classroom interactions, Literacy and Curriculum.
We are proud to say the process is complete and we were fully accredited by APPLE in November 2008
Children who are between 1 – 4 years old may attend the school. Class placement is determined by the child’s birth date. September 1st is the date used since the Escambia County School system uses that date.
Parent teacher conferences are conducted twice a year to assess the development of each child. Teachers will complete a Child Development Inventory prior to the conference. This will provide the guide for the teachers to develop lessons to teach skill that are needed. This also provides a time for the teachers and parents to get to know one another better.
The most valuable natural resources on the playground are trees and space. We have very old, huge oak trees providing shade to about three fourths of the playground; and, we have a very large playground. We want the children to explore and investigate every aspect of the space. There is a large variety of play equipment to assist each child in developing large muscles, balance, rhythm and coordination. There is even a bike path to provide a hard surface for the riding toys.
